A Step in the Right Direction

Toms Field

Tom’s Field campsite in the beautiful Purbeck Hills is the first business in Dorset to support the South West Coast Path by paying for a new map board that shows five circular walks.  It has also made an additional contribution towards the maintenance of walks in the area, and has agreed to print and sell leaflets of the walks from PDFs provided by the South West Coast Path team, with the surplus going towards path improvements.  Walkers will also be able to download detailed walk information from the map board by using an app that scans the QR (Quick Response) code on to their smart phone.

Owner of Tom’s field, Sarah Wootton, said: “We are delighted with the map board that is now in place at the campsite.  Being able to advise our visitors about walks is an important part of the service, and we encourage the exploration of this beautiful area.  The addition of the use of smart phone technology is an exciting development – I’ve already tried it out!”

Jenny Penney, from Dorset County Council’s Coastal Ranger Team, added: “Tom’s Field is a very special campsite that caters for the needs of walkers and campers in Purbeck.  It is appropriate that together we are the first to benefit from the Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE) funding opportunity.  The site is within a hair’s breadth of the fabulous Jurassic Coast and the South West Coast Path linking to sites such as Durlston Country Park, Old Harry and Studland to the east, and St Aldhelm’s Head to the west, and yet it is only a ten-minute drive from Swanage.”
